Keep your mind on its toes and join us for a Cedar Sinai Park Lecture Series! The Cedar Sinai Park Lecture Series offers residents and community members convenient and stimulating opportunities to flex those intellectual muscles. Our education programs feature multiple talks on topics ranging from modern technology to music, brain fitness, and more. A goal of this program is to make lifelong learning easily accessible to residents and community members alike.
The Cedar Sinai Park Lecture Series is open to residents and community members. Unless otherwise noted, all lectures take place at 6:45 p.m. (with refreshments to follow) in Zidell Hall at Rose Schnitzer Manor, which is located at 6140 SW Boundary Street, Portland. Winter 2012 Series: Mind Matters
The winter 2012 series starts January 3rd. “Mind Matters” explores new research in the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and the effects of music on brain chemistry and function.
Cutting-Edge Research in Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment
With Dr. Joseph Quinn

Dr. Joseph Quinn, Associate Professor of Neurology at Oregon Health and Sciences University, will present current research focusing on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Quinn is currently the chief investigator for a study of safety and effectiveness of new drugs for Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Quinn completed his undergraduate studies in Biochemical Sciences at Harvard University, his M.D. at University of Southern California, his internship at L.A. County Hospital, and his neurology residency at OHSU. He is also a staff neurologist at the Portland VA Medical Center and Director of the Portland VA Medical Center Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Care Center.
Oral Health and Its Link to Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

Dr. Eli Schwarz will present the most current research findings linking oral health to degenerative diseases of the brain. He will also promote the message that it’s never too late to start improving oral hygiene
Dr. Schwarz is a Professor and Chair of the OHSU Department of Community Dentistry. He is a founding fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and has held many prestigious professional appointments around the globe. Dr. Schwarz has a DDS and a doctoral degree from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and a Master’s degree in Public Health from Hadassah Medical School, University of Jerusalem.

Anna Sanger Reed, Education and Outreach Coordinator for Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon, will present the most current research and information regarding Parkinson’s disease.
Ms. Sanger Reed joined Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon in February 2008 after graduating with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Washington. Her responsibilities include overseeing PRO’s network of support groups and exercise classes, the annual conference, monthly education programs, and training for long-term care professionals.
Music, Memory and Our Mind

Beth Rousseau will offer an interactive presentation addressing the benefits of music and long-term brain health. This lecture promises to be both informative and fun.
Ms. Rousseau is a Board Certified Music Therapist and a Qualified Mental Health Professional. She received an M.A. in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in Boulder, CO, and a B.A. in Music Performance from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. She is a member of the adjunct faculty in Music Therapy at Marylhurst University and former president of the Oregon Association for Music Therapy.

Joyce Beedle will offer a discussion focusing on current treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and where treatment is headed.
Ms. Beedle is President of Alzheimer’s Consulting Service, Inc. For more than 30 years, she has focused on the care of people with chronic illness, specializing in Alzheimer’s disease since 1984. Ms. Beedle graduated from the University of Arizona in 1978 and received a B.S. in Nursing.

The 2010 Summer Series covered a variety of topics: social media for seniors, comic book artist R. Crumb, master drawings from the Crocker Art Museum, and consumer fraud protection.
Israel in the Psyche of American Jewry (Winter 2009)
Presenter Sylvia Frankel led five engaging discussions on Israel in the Psyche of American Jewry. Ms. Frankel served as director of the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center for 12 years and has taught in the Melton program since the fall of 2000. Sylvia Frankel is also an adjunct professor in the Religious Studies Department of Lewis and Clark College.
Musicology: Notes to Remember (Fall 2009)
Kick off for this lecture series was an investigation of music history with Pythagoras and the Ancient Greeks, the music of the Medieval and Renaissance eras, and western music and how it has evolved. Subsequent music lectures explored jazz, swing and the big band era as well as a look into the future of music.
