Cultural Competence in Nursing
Purpose
The purpose of our Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing (NCCN) project is to develop and promote cultural competence in nursing practice, leadership, and mentorship.
Program Overview
Consultants from Breaking Through Diversity provided four train-the-trainer sessions with pre‐selected Cedar Sinai Park nurses. The purpose of these train-the-trainer sessions is to to prepare nurses to take on new leadership roles in guiding other staff members in cultural competence development through nurse-led training workshops.
The workshops are guided by two core values — community participation and hands‐on learning. Hands‐on learning with interactive exercises provided the opportunity to reflect on one’s own construct of cultural competence and fostered social responsibility and caring for others.
Each of the four train-the-trainer modules was designed to address and accomplish the following:
- Cultural competence implies awareness of one’s own preconceptions and biases.
- Cultural competence requires recognition of the impact of the organization’s assumptions and practices.
- Begin to identify key issues, competencies and interventions in moving toward culturally competent policies and practices.
- Identify effective communication skills across cultural lines.
- Be willing to take leadership and responsibility, take risks, ask questions, and be courageous.
- Highlight cultural and linguistic achievements and strategies to maintain successes at Cedar Sinai Park

Program Evaluation
Diana White, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate at Portland State University’s Institute on Aging, conducted a thorough evaluation of the CSP Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing Program. Her in-depth evaluation has helped to illuminate important insights and lessons learned throughout the course of this project.
For more information on the outcomes and lessons learned, please feel free to contact Kim Fuson, RJHC Administrator and Project Manager for CSP’s Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing program. You can reach Kim at kim.fuson[at]cedarsinaipark.org.
