Jobs to Careers
Promoting Work-Based Learning for Quality Care
Jobs to Careers is a national initiative that seeks to advance and reward the skill and career development of low-wage incumbent workers providing care and services on the front lines of our health and health care systems. (www.jobs2careers.org).
As a Teaching and Learning organization, Cedar Sinai Park recognizes the ongoing training and educational needs of employees in improving their job skills and supporting career advancement. Adopting the work-based learning model of training, Rose Schnitzer Manor utilized a certified job profiling process to standardize job descriptions and help set a standard for community based care facilities such as residential and assisted living direct care workers in Oregon.
The work-based learning model of training incorporates job profiles and thirty separate training topics designed to achieve the following:
- Meet regulatory training requirements.
- Enhance an environment for teaching and learning.
- Enhance person centered care.
- Standardize the knowledge base and skills sets of direct care workers while improving work performance, employee, resident and family satisfaction.
- Track employee training accomplishments.
The key to successful recruitment and retention is recognition of the value(s) that direct care workers can bring to all aspects of service to the organization as well as recognition of their skill acquisition and learning along with accomplishments in performance.
Rose Schnitzer Manor recently received an award and special recognition from the State of Oregon Department of Human Services Seniors and People with Disabilities Client Care Monitoring Unit. This special recognition was awarded to the top three applicants in the state for an Innovative Practice Program in the area of Workforce Recruitment and Retention.
